this is from a post I made to my college board.
I just wanted to let you all know that I'm undertaking this, and if you have suggestions for me or would like to help, just let me know. I would especially like if you can think of any special guests/speakers I could bring on my campus
xoxo
First, if you are reading this but don't really know a lot about me, I'm Megan Hunt. I'm a senior at dana and this is my last semester. I used to be very active in the Campus Conservatives group, but I feel like I have less and less in common with what the mainstream "conservative" message has become. I've decided to start an independent student-run organization called Advocates of Liberty on the Dana College campus to serve as an outlet for libertarian/third party discussion and discourse.
Advocates of Liberty will host meetings several times each month on campus, showing libertarian-themed films, serving snacks, and ending with a discussion of the movie and other liberty-related topics. Really we can talk about anything, I don't care. I also have several speakers who will come speak about themes ranging from free market economics to smaller government.
This isn't mean to be partisan, and nobody who defines themselves as conservative, liberal, democrat, republican, socialist, whatever, will be rejected or silenced. This is because the libertarian message is something that almost everyone already agrees with, to varying degrees. There is very little debate on our campus, and although our current campus organizations offer some good places to seek refuge among similarly-minded people, they don't actively attempt to expose us to new ideas or debate.
Even if you aren't interested in personally participating in a debate, confrontation, or discussion (and I am on your side there), Advocates of Liberty promises to expose you to new ideas. For example, author and Austrian economics expert Jorge Besada is planned to speak, and there are several films I am preparing to show during our film+discussion meetings throughout the semester.
Whether you participate verbally or just mentally, attending the many Advocates of Liberty meetings this semester will be worth your while. My goal is to inspire Dana students to learn about the Libertarian small-government message question the status quo and the attitude that we must be divided by party lines.
Here is a short list of some of the films I would like to show:
Network, The Fountainhead, Fahrenheit 451, Brazil, The People vs. Larry Flynt
and possibly some documentaries such as Founding Brothers, Commanding Heights: The Battle for World Economy, and Unconstitutional-The War on Our Civil Liberties.
I've also created a facebook group here:
dana.facebook.com/group.php?gid=4624567355
Depending on when my materials arrive, I will have a booth in the campus center during the first week of classes to promote Advocates of Liberty, advertise the date of our first film/meeting, and explain the Libertarian philosophy to Dana Students. Make sure to keep your eye out!
Meanwhile, take the world's smallest political quiz. At the booth in the campus center, I will also be administering this quiz and plotting the results on a big graph!

Hope to see you this semester!
